4th Annual Ag Heritage Day Slate for July 1

Join The Northern Tier Cultural Alliance and the Towanda Farmers Market on Tuesday, July 1 from 1 pm to 5 pm as we celebrate our 4th annual Agricultural Heritage Day. Demonstrations and performances will occur in and around Washington Street Station in Towanda throughout the afternoon.

Participating with displays will be: The Endless Mtns. Visitors Bureau, Endless Mtns. Heritage Region, Northern Tier Buy Fresh Buy Local chapter, Penn State Cooperative Extension, Bradford County Farm Museum and The Home Textile Museum. Spinning, loom weaving and fiber arts will be demonstrated by Glenfiddich Wool, Deb Schildt, Cats Cradle Spinning Guild and others. Various craft vendors will be set up to sell their wares. An old-time fiddler is rumored to be planning to come and play if his schedule allows. Other surprises are in store for the day, so don’t miss it!

In addition to Ag Heritage Day demonstrations and displays, visitors can enjoy sampling and purchasing local foods at the Towanda Farmer's Market. Vendors at the 2008 Towanda Farmers Market include: Sue Bullock, Back Achers Farm, North Rome; Mike Dreisch, Red House Bakery, Stevensville; Sylvia Ellis, Hawk Hill Farm, Standing Stone; Bernard Jurkowski of Inn to the Seasons, Canton; Diane and Phil Fiorentino, The Herb Corner, Gillett. Other vendors will be joining the market as the season progresses.

An added feature this year will be a filmmaker documenting the event for a “2008: Year of the Barn” DVD. Local and retired farmers are encouraged to come to Washington St. Station on July 1 to pick up or drop off barn surveys and talk about your barn and memories of farming for the film. Filming is supported by a grant from the PA Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
