Schools, Libraries, Historical Societies to
Receive Barn DVDs
As a result of grant funding through the PA Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Arts,
the Northern Tier Cultural Alliance (NTCA) is pleased to provide a copy of "The Barns and Agriculture
of Pennsylvania's Northern Tier: A Portrait" DVD to each middle and high school library and to each
public library and historical society in a six county region.
The one-hour documentary is the culmination of an 18-month project focusing on regional barns – their
architecture, uses and history. The film takes a look at the history of the barn structure, how to
identify its origins, and the role it plays in past and present agriculture. The DVD also features
interviews with barn experts and local farmers as well as footage from NTCA's two Year of the Barn
Dances held in Coudersport and Troy. The Year of the Barn project covered the six counties of
Susquehanna, Bradford, Tioga, Potter, Wyoming and Sullivan.
DVD content is great for use in PA and American history classes from 6th grade through college and
for community groups, Senior Centers, 4-H Clubs and more. The Bradford County Library will be hosting
a showing of the DVD on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 7pm at the County Library in West Burlington
Township.
For questions regarding the DVD, the overall project or if your organization or community group is
interested in hosting a showing of the DVD as a fundraising event, contact NTCA at 570-265-7455 or
info@ntculturalalliance.org.
The Northern Tier Cultural Alliance (NTCA) fosters awareness and appreciation of the cultural
traditions produced by the unique blend of diverse cultures found in our region through annual and
special events, exhibits, the PA North Country Artisan Center & Store, educational programs and
community involvement. NTCA serves as one of seven Regional Folk Arts Support Centers in partnership
with the PA Council on the Arts (PCA) in a statewide Folk Arts Infrastructure Initiative that seeks “to
strengthen awareness and understanding, as well as participation in, traditional arts across the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania." In addition, NTCA serves as one of 17 regional service providers
selected by the PCA to administer the PA Partners in the Arts Program which small grants opportunities
for organizations to support a wide variety of local and community arts activities.
In support of its mission and the Folk Arts Infrastructure Initiative, NTCA now offers support to
artists and community organizations from 10 northern Pennsylvania counties: Bradford, Cameron, Clinton,
Lycoming, McKean, Potter, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga and Wyoming. For more information, visit NTCA
